How we started, what we believe, and why.

From the very beginning we have been deeply inspired by the the potential of the youth in disadvantaged communities

When we first piloted the idea for a free computer coding program in Zambia in late 2023, we sought to answer a few crucial questions:

  1. Could we teach coding without reliable internet and electricity?
  2. Could we teach coding to those who had never used a computer before?
  3. Would the students enjoy it?
  4. Would the schools and parents support us?

The answer to all of these questions, and many others, was an overwhelming YES.

There is, and continues to be, an incredible thirst for technology resources and digital education in the communities we serve. Equally, there remains a heartbreaking lack of opportunities for youth and young adults. We are on a mission to change that.

Our Model

Our vision is to cultivate a generation of purpose-driven, tech-savvy, and entrepreneurial young adults. We have fully committed ourselves to preparing them for meaningful careers in the technology industry.

We designed a free, full-time program to teach the most in-demand skills in the market, and we tirelessly worked to eliminate all possible barriers to entry. Recognizing the importance of continued education for the youth, we expanded our efforts.

When you join Code Savanna through the School Outreach Program, you’re not only preparing for the workforce but also giving back by teaching coding to kids in your community. By participating in our highly anticipated hackathon, AfroHacks, you can discover new ideas and technologies under the guidance of experienced mentors, connect with peers and partners in the tech community, and expand your skill set in a supportive and safe environment.

our first home

As a grassroots organization, investing fully in the communities we serve has always been paramount. Once we developed an impactful and scalable education model, we needed a physical space to make it official.

Our first partnership was with Pestalozzi, which provided us with a space, learners, and a few computers that have been invaluable. Moving forward, we are exploring the use of shipping containers and solar power for our future hubs to overcome the infrastructure challenges we face. Our goal is to build our own innovation hub by 2026.

We’re excited about the journey ahead and can’t wait to share our amazing work and experiences with you.
